Abstract:
Everyday a lot of waste is created by everyone in this world. For example when you go out to eat a lot of waste is created because you have to know away you napkin, wrappers, utensils, drinks and anything else that you may have used. Then trash day comes and all you do is push your can out to the curb and never think about that waste again. America had been generating trash at an astonishing rate, almost about 600,00 tons per day or 210 million tons per year. This is more trash then almost all of the major countries. The majority of this trash is buried in landfills while only some is recycled and burned. The purpose of this lab was for our class to record how much trash their family made in 24 hours. We examine how landills were made and even what happens to the trash in landfills. When finished with the lab I saw that in 24 hours my family produced 143g of trash. Using that number an multiple it by all of the families in America and that is a lot of trash.
Problem:
What are the problems associated with landfills and how are these problems solved?
Materials:
-Trash bags
-Waste
Methods:
1. Carry a trash bag around with you for 24 hours collecting all your waste, except:
- Food products
- Feminine hygiene products, bandages, or anything else that would have body fluids or blood
Data:
Categories Items Recyclable Compostable Reusable
Paper Products mail, napkins yes yes yes
Aluminum aluminum can yes no yes
Plastics bottle water, two plastic bags, yes no yes

Analysis and Conclusions:
1. Today there are many things done to control the pollution of landfills. There is clay liner which is used o block pollutants from leaving the landfill and they are sometimes called sanitary landfills. Then another type would be a municipal solid waste landfill. These two landfills make sure to keep the landfills trash from the land. Waste can also be disposed using waste combustion which involves the burning of municipal waste.
2. Landfills such as the one in North Wake County can cost a lot of money because they are doing as many things as possible to reduce the amount of pollution that landfills can cause. They have the main landfill but then they also have other sections for certain waste. For example at the entrance there is a recycling center for all recyclable materials. Then there is a drop-off site for materials that had been banned from the landfill because they can not be recycled. All of these rules and different sections cost a lot of money and that is why landfills like these are expensive.
3. The amount of waste that we collected was a lot less than I expected. I thought that because we have five people inside of my house that we were going to have created a lot more. But other than that we crated a lot less than other people in my class.
4. Everybody in their families produce a different amount of trash because everybody does different things throughout the day. For example some people can produce a lot of trash because they do a lot of things through out the day while others can produce a little bit of trash because they barely do anything through out the day.
5. In about one month's time my family would produce 22,165g of trash.
6. I predict that in one day 13,000 students would produce about 1,859,000g of trash.
7. The total weight of my recyclable material is 143g.
8. The total weight of my reusable material was 143g.
9. The total weight of my combustible material was 20g.
10. Over the course of the year that trash that I collected would produce about 265,980g of trash. So by putting it in a trash bag that is how much trash that would be saved over the course of a year.
11. If all of the trash that the students created was not thrown in the landfill then the school would save about 1,900,000g of trash.
General Analysis and Conclusions:
After completing this lab we got a chance to see how much trash really can be created in one day when you add it all today. When garbage day comes along all of this is being brought to the landfill. The more trash that we create the higher the amount of pollution there will be in landfills. Lately there have been changes in certain places to help decrease the amount of pollution that is being created. Just as shown in the articles if things are not done the pollution created by landfills can have great effects. This article shows that Canadians are being warned because there are dangerous levels of cadmium in the landfills. Test done have shown that there is twice the legal limit for cadmium in the landfill. For humans transportation system in the body will facilitate the toxic cadmium causing it to accumulate in the kidneys, eyes and tissues. This is why places like the North Wake County Landfills have different sections to try as hard as possible for there to be little pollution. But when completing this article there were minor errors. When collecting our waste we did not keep all of our trash, meaning the amount a trash produced by my family each day was higher then what was recorded. Other than that the overall lab was good and if I was to do this lab again I would want for the waste to have been collected for more than 24 hours.
